Futsal court built next to ex-housing ministry site
Although authorities conducted an investigation into the incident, the cause of the fire has not been made public.
A futsal court has been constructed adjacent to the site of the former Housing Ministry building, which was destroyed in a fire in December last year.
The fire on 12 December 2024 destroyed the building, which housed the Ministry of Housing as well as several other government ministries and state institutions.
Since the fire, the affected government offices, including the Housing Ministry, have been operating temporarily from Dharubaaruge.
Although authorities conducted an investigation into the incident, the cause of the fire has not been made public.
The futsal court has now been completed next to the site of the former ministry building and has been in use for some time.
Its construction has prompted discussion on social media, with some users questioning why the cause of the fire and the findings of the investigation have not been disclosed.
Malé City Council member for North Maafannu, Khadeeja Mohamed of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), also commented on the matter in a post on social media.
Sharing a photograph of the site, Khadeeja said the government had not disclosed the cause of the fire or released the report prepared by Indian investigators following their involvement in the investigation.
"Suddenly, we see a court built here," she wrote.
Following the fire, then Housing Minister Dr Ali Haidar said that almost all documents and data held by the ministry had been lost.
The ministry later stated that the report prepared by the Flat Committee responsible for identifying beneficiaries under the previous administration's Gedhoruveriya housing scheme, along with records of the committee's work, could no longer be traced.
