WAMCO warns unsorted waste will be rejected at Thilafushi
WAMCO said a significant amount of waste arriving at Thilafushi is mixed together, creating operational challenges for waste handling.
The Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has announced that waste delivered to the Thilafushi Regional Waste Management Facility will be rejected if it is not sorted in accordance with established regulations.
In a public statement issued on Sunday, WAMCO said a significant amount of waste arriving at Thilafushi is mixed together, creating operational challenges for waste handling.
The corporation said mixed waste has also contributed to previous fire incidents at the facility.
Under existing regulations, waste transported to Thilafushi must be separated into three categories:

Construction and demolition waste

General household waste

Bulky waste
WAMCO said construction and demolition waste must be kept separate from all other types of waste.
According to the corporation, segregating waste into the three categories is necessary for the safe management of waste and to protect staff and equipment at the facility.
WAMCO said vehicles and vessels transporting unsorted waste will no longer be permitted to dispose of their loads at Thilafushi.
The corporation added that any vehicle or vessel turned away for carrying unsorted waste will be required to sort its load before returning, and details of such cases will be reported to the relevant regulatory authorities.
