8 Bangladeshi nationals die in Maldives within 10 days

Eight Bangladeshi nationals died in the Maldives within a period of 10 days due to causes including workplace accidents, strokes and heart conditions, according to reports citing the High Commission of Bangladesh in the Maldives.

Bangladeshi media reported last week that the deaths occurred between 25 July and last Monday.

Those who died included seven men aged between 21 and 47 and a 70-year-old woman.

According to information provided by the Bangladesh High Commission, two workers, aged 21 and 23, died in workplace accidents.

A 37-year-old man died in a suspected case of suicide. The Maldives Police Service is investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.

Four of the deaths were attributed to strokes. They involved two men aged 45, as well as men aged 44 and 47.

The 70-year-old woman died after suffering a heart attack, according to the reports.

Bangladeshi news outlet Views Bangladesh reported that members of the Bangladeshi community in the Maldives had raised concerns about the circumstances faced by some migrant workers.

"Many workers have to live away from their families for long periods and face severe financial difficulties and psychological challenges. They believe this contributes to a rise in medical emergencies such as strokes and heart conditions," the outlet reported, citing Bangladeshi nationals living in the Maldives.

The Bangladesh High Commission is working with Maldivian authorities to repatriate the bodies.

As of last Wednesday, two bodies had been repatriated to Bangladesh, while arrangements were being made to return the remaining bodies.
