President Mohamed Muizzu has submitted two nominees to the People's Majlis for appointment to the Board of the Local Government Authority (LGA).
The nominations were submitted on Monday as the terms of three LGA Board members appointed through Parliament are due to expire on 20 September.
The President selected the two nominees from candidates who applied following a public announcement seeking applications for the positions.
The nominees are Aishath Areefa of Thibrozuge, GDh. Thinadhoo, for the seat designated for a member with expertise in gender equality, and Mohamed Arif of Rathvilaage, Sh. Kanditheemu, for the position requiring expertise in governance or public administration.
Both nominations were forwarded to Parliament's Decentralisation Committee on Monday for evaluation.
The LGA Board consists of nine members drawn from the government, local councils, Women's Development Committees and civil society.
Under the composition of the board, a Cabinet minister accountable to Parliament and the LGA's Chief Executive Officer are appointed by the President.
The board also includes a woman with expertise in gender equality, a member with expertise in governance or public administration, and a representative of civil society organisations.
Three members are elected to represent local government bodies: one from among city councillors, one from among island councillors and one from among presidents of Women's Development Committees.
The ninth member is appointed by the Ministry of Finance from among its officials.
