Parliament on Monday approved the appointment of Mohamed Shafeeq Mahmood as the Vice-President of the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM).
President Mohamed Muizzu submitted Shafeeq’s name for the position of Vice-President of the HRCM. The matter was referred to the Human Rights and Gender Committee during an extraordinary sitting of Parliament held today.
The committee decided not to conduct a new interview, noting that Shafeeq had already been interviewed and approved as a member of the HRCM earlier. On this basis, the committee recommended that Parliament approve his appointment to the new post.
In the parliamentary vote, 47 members supported Shafeeq’s appointment while one member voted against.
Shafeeq, who was appointed as a member of the HRCM on 8 September, also serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the Local Government Authority (LGA).
The HRCM was earlier chaired by Mariyam Muna, who was appointed to the post earlier.
