Former Attorney General Azima Shakoor has been appointed Principal Secretary to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
The President’s Office confirmed the appointment to Dhauru, saying Azima assumed her duties on Sunday.
Azima, who has also served as a personal family lawyer to President Muizzu, has previously held several government and political positions.
She contested the Malé mayoral election on the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) ticket after the position became vacant when Muizzu, who had served as Malé City Mayor, was elected President.
Azima previously served as Attorney General and later as Minister for Legal Affairs at the President’s Office during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen.
In February 2019, the State charged Azima in connection with a money laundering case involving Yameen and funds linked to the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) scandal.
She faced two charges: providing false information to a state institution and facilitating money laundering.
The State withdrew the charges against Azima in November last year.
