Hisaan Hussain resigns as MDP vice president

Hisaan Hussain resigned as Vice President of the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on Thursday, saying her mandate for the post was linked to the party President who appointed her.

In a resignation letter addressed to MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, Hisaan said the Vice President is appointed by the party President and that she did not believe it was consistent with democratic principles to remain in the post after the President had resigned.

Hisaan said her appointment and mandate as Vice President were derived from the authority of the party President who appointed her.

She said continuing in the position without a new mandate would not be in line with the democratic norms and principles she believes should govern the party.

Hisaan said she would remain a member of the MDP and continue working for the party despite stepping down from the leadership position.

Her resignation follows the departure of Abdulla Shahid as MDP President earlier this month.

Shahid resigned as party President on 14 August after announcing his intention to contest the MDP’s presidential primary for the 2028 presidential election.

At the time, Shahid said he did not consider it fair to contest the party’s presidential primary while holding its top executive position.

Hisaan’s resignation leaves the MDP without its President and Vice President as the party prepares for the process of selecting its candidate for the 2028 presidential election.
