The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) National Council on Monday appointed former party Vice President Mohamed Shifaz as Deputy Chairperson in charge of financial affairs.

The position became vacant following the resignation of former MP Ahmed Abdulla.

Shifaz was nominated for the post by MDP Chairperson and former President Mohamed Nasheed, who chaired Monday night’s National Council meeting.

The nomination was approved through a show of hands, with 30 of the 34 members present voting in favour.

The MDP has two Deputy Chairperson positions, with responsibilities divided between financial and administrative affairs. Ibrahim Waheed, known as Ibrey, serves as Deputy Chairperson in charge of administrative affairs.

Shifaz previously served as Vice President of the MDP and as a Minister at the President’s Office during an MDP administration.

During a split within the MDP, Shifaz aligned with the faction led by Nasheed.

In 2023, he joined Nasheed and other former MDP members in establishing The Democrats. Shifaz served as the party’s first Vice President.

He later left The Democrats and returned to the MDP.

His appointment on Monday places him back in the MDP’s leadership as the party prepares for its upcoming political activities.
