President expresses grief over deaths of 2 children, calls for safety measures

President Mohamed Muizzu on Tuesday expressed grief over the deaths of two children and called for measures to improve safety on roads and in high-rise buildings.
Nine-year-old Zeeva Sinan Ahmed, who was injured in a road accident in Hulhumalé Phase 2 on Saturday night, died on Tuesday morning while receiving treatment at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
Zeeva had been receiving treatment on a ventilator after sustaining head injuries in the accident on Hithigas Magu near Vinares Tower 7.
Hours later, another child died after falling from a high-rise building.
In a statement on social media, Muizzu expressed condolences to the families of both children and said the incidents had caused grief and concern across the country.
The President said raising awareness about risks on roads and in high-rise buildings was a responsibility that required the participation of the public.
He called for measures to ensure the safety of windows, balconies, railings and other areas in high-rise buildings that could pose risks, particularly to children.
Muizzu also called on building management personnel and families to work together to introduce and enforce measures to protect children, as well as people with mental health conditions and disabilities who may require additional supervision.
The President said government agencies, state-owned companies, civil society organisations and the public should work together to improve safety on roads and in residential buildings.
He also called for awareness programmes to be conducted across the country on measures that can prevent accidents and other incidents that pose risks to life.
