All opposition members detained at Sunday evening's protest demanding the immediate release of former president Abdulla Yameen has been released.

Following Yameen's conviction on Sunday, several of his supporters took to the streets of the capital Male Sunday evening to protest. However, this protest demanding the release of Yameen was soon broken up by heavily deployed police forces taking in to custody a total of 16 protestors.

"All those arrested have been released now. No one remains in our custody," an official from the police said Monday.

The Criminal Court found the former president guilty on the charges of money laundering and accepting a bribe and sentenced him to 11 years in prison yesterday.

Following the sentence passed by the Criminal Court, Yameen's legal team held a press conference on Sunday refusing to accept the court's decision stating that they would launch a swift appeal process.
