Yameen appointed PNF president; son, ex-VP as deputies

Former President Abdulla Yameen was on Thursday elected president of the People’s National Front (PNF).
Yameen was the sole candidate for the position and was elected at the party’s national congress held at Artificial Beach in Malé.
During the congress, the PNF also elected two vice-presidents, a registrar, a secretary general, a treasurer, and 14 members of the party’s Senate.
Yameen’s son, Zain Abdullah Yameen, and his lawyer and former Vice President Dr Mohamed Jameel Ahmed were appointed as the party’s vice-presidents. Both were unopposed and automatically elected to the positions.
Other elected officials include Mohamed Maleeh Jamal as Secretary General and Mohamed Musthafa as Treasurer.
Two candidates contested for the post of PNF Registrar — Nihad Mohamed Ali and Ali Shiyan Nasheed. Shiyan Nasheed won the position with 219 votes, while Nihad received 117 votes.
A total of 48 candidates contested for the party’s Senate, with the following members elected: Adam Asif, Ahmed Fayaz Ali, Abdulla Samad, Shareefa Saeed, Haleemath Zuhaira, Ali Shah, Naif Shaukath, Fathimath Rahma, Mohamed Abdul Latheef, Adhulee Ismail, Abdulla Saheel Jaleel, Mohamed Maizar Adam Zahir, Dr Abdulla Ibrahim, and Aishath Hafeeza.
Addressing the gathering, Yameen called on party members to work together under his leadership and said that the PNF’s work would be guided by those who have remained loyal to its cause.
