Maldives, Malaysia sign agreements on defence and Islamic affairs
The latest agreements follow five MoUs signed between the two countries in different areas during President Muizzu’s visit to Malaysia last year.

The Maldives and Malaysia signed two memoranda of understanding on Tuesday to expand cooperation in defence and Islamic affairs.
The agreements were signed at a ceremony held at the President’s Office during Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s official visit to the Maldives at the invitation of President Mohamed Muizzu.
The two countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Defence Cooperation and a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in the Field of Islamic Affairs.
The defence cooperation agreement was signed on behalf of the Maldives by Defence Minister Hassan Rasheed. Malaysia was represented by Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Utama Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz.
The agreement on cooperation in Islamic affairs was signed on behalf of the Maldives by Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed. Malaysia was again represented by Tengku Zafrul.

The Maldives and Malaysia established diplomatic relations 58 years ago. Malaysia is also home to a sizeable Maldivian community.
