Police called to housing ministry after official document lockers found open

Police were called to the Ministry of Housing after lockers containing official documents were found to have been opened outside established procedures, authorities said.

According to police, officers visited the ministry on Friday afternoon after the matter was reported by the Housing Ministry and examined the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Ministry employees inspected the documents in the presence of police and confirmed that no documents or other items were missing, police said.

The incident comes after a fire in 2024 destroyed the office building that housed the Housing Ministry and two other government ministries.

Following the fire, the ministries moved their operations temporarily to Dharubaaruge, where they have continued to operate.

Police recently disclosed details of their investigation into the 2024 fire, saying forensic examinations found evidence of electrical short circuits and no evidence indicating that the fire had been deliberately started.
