MWSC to take over water, sewerage services in Addu, Fuvahmulah
Fahmy said the transfer process would be completed before 13 October, after which MWSC would begin providing water and sewerage services in Addu and Fuvahmulah.
Malé Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) will take over water and sewerage services in Addu and Fuvahmulah from Fenaka Corporation under a framework agreement signed on Sunday.
The agreement was signed as the government moves to dissolve Fenaka and transfer its operations to State Electric Company (STELCO) and MWSC as part of efforts to reduce state expenditure and restructure state-owned companies.
The framework agreement for transferring water and sewerage services in Addu and Fuvahmulah was signed at a ceremony on Sunday.
MWSC Managing Director Hussain Fahmy signed the agreement on behalf of the company, while Fenaka Managing Director Mohamed Afeef Hassan signed on behalf of Fenaka.
Fahmy said the transfer process would be completed before 13 October, after which MWSC would begin providing water and sewerage services in Addu and Fuvahmulah.
Afeef said he expected MWSC to provide the services at a better standard than Fenaka had been able to provide.
The transfer comes amid recurring problems with utility services in the two southern cities.
Addu, which has the second-largest population in the Maldives, has experienced repeated disruptions to water and electricity services across its connected islands.
Fuvahmulah, which has a population of more than 10,000, has also faced problems with utility services.
Complaints over water supply disruptions and the quality of drinking water in Fuvahmulah led authorities to waive water bills for residents in November 2025.
The government recently announced plans to dissolve Fenaka and divide its responsibilities between STELCO and MWSC. Under the restructuring, electricity services currently provided by Fenaka are to be transferred to STELCO, while water and sewerage services will be transferred to MWSC.
