City constituencies released; complaints now open

The Elections Commission (EC) on Tuesday released the provisional report outlining the constituencies for the Maldives local council elections scheduled for 4 April 2026.

Changes in the composition of city councils under current law have required a revision of constituency boundaries. The EC has issued an interim report detailing the new allocations.

According to the Commission, the period for submitting complaints regarding the provisional report is open until Monday. Complaints may be filed between 9:00am and 3:00pm on all days except Sundays, and from 3:00pm to 5:00pm on Sundays. Submissions will be accepted in writing at the EC office or through the Commission’s official email.

The interim report lists the following constituencies:

Hdh. Kulhudhufushi: North Constituency, North West Constituency, North Central Constituency, South Central Constituency, South West Constituency, East South Constituency (seven councillors including the Mayor)

Gdh. Thinadhoo: North West Constituency, North East Constituency, North East Constituency, South West Constituency, South Constituency, South East Constituency (seven councillors including the Mayor)

Fuvahmulah: Dandimagu, Dhiguwaadu, Hoadhandu, Maadhandu, Miskithmagu, Funadu, Malegan, Doodigan (nine councillors including the Mayor)

Addu: Hithadhoo Mulekede, Hithadhoo Koravau, Hithadhoo Beyrumathi, Hithadhoo Medhuvau, Hithadhoo Rasgedhara, Hithadhoo Maamendhoo, Maradhoo, Maradhoofeydhoo, Feydhoo Magudhoo, Feydhoo Madhela (11 councillors including the Mayor)

Malé: Hulhumalé North, Hulhumalé Central, Hulhumalé South, Henveiru West, Central Henveiru, Henveiru South, Henveiru North, Galolhu North, Galolhu South, Maafannu North, Maafannu Central, Maafannu South, Maafannu West, Mahchangoalhi North, Mahchangoalhi Central, Mahchangoalhi South, Villimalé (18 councillors including the Mayor)

The EC stated that constituencies allocated for women councillors will be identified after the release of the final report.

The interim report also outlines the number of councillors elected from island communities. Three councillors will be elected from 133 islands with populations below 2,000, while five councillors will be elected from 46 islands with populations of 2,000 or more, including Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo, which have separated from Addu.
