The Elections Commission (EC) on Tuesday announced the constituencies allocated for women members in the local council elections scheduled for 4 April 2026.
Changes to the composition of city councils under the law required the redefinition of constituencies. The EC issued an interim report Tuesday outlining the division of constituencies, followed by a separate announcement detailing those reserved for women.

With the removal of Atoll Councils and the administrative separation of two islands from Addu, the upcoming elections will elect members to five city councils, 179 island councils, and women’s development committees in each island.
Under the revised structure:

Three council members will be elected for 133 islands with populations below 2,000.

Five council members will be elected for 46 islands with populations of 2,000 or more, including Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo.

City councils will comprise 18 members for Male’, 11 for Addu, nine for Fuvahmulah, and seven each for Kulhudhufushi and Thinadhoo.
