The Bilehdhoo Island Council has decided to provide an allowance of MVR 2,500 to people who choose to become residents of the island, as part of measures to prevent the island’s population from declining.
The decision was announced on the council’s Facebook page Tuesday and will take effect this month.
According to the council, the allowance will be provided to people who wish to become residents of Bilehdhoo. The council has also decided to allocate funds for the allowance in its budget.
In addition, the council has decided to charge MVR 5,000 to residents who leave the island.
The council said the measure was introduced as part of efforts to maintain the island’s population.
According to the latest census, 967 people live on Bilehdhoo. The island’s registered population is 1,417.
Bilehdhoo is the third island council to introduce a fee for residents leaving the island.
The Lh. Hinnavaru Island Council decided last month to charge MVR 2,000 from residents who leave the island.
The Gdh. Thinadhoo City Council also charges a fee of MVR 5,000 from residents who leave the island. The decision was made last year.
