150 hectares will be reclaimed from the lagoon of Thilafushi

Thilafushi land reclamation awarded to Chinese firm

The land reclamation project to develop Thilafushi as the main industrial hub of the Maldives has been China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC).

Speaking at PSM’s Maldives Today segment, the Industrial Manager at Housing Development Corporation (HDC) Mohamed Shamin said:

  • Preparations have been made for the land reclamation process.

  • The agreement had been signed on December 15 and work will begin in January.

  • The reclamation will be carried out in three phases with the first phase reclaiming 40 hectares of land. 

  • Land reclaimed in the first phase will be allotted within 12 months.

"Once the land reclamation is completed, we will be working on land use plan for various business and economy purposes. We have a 3 to 4 year plan to complete the entire master plan,” Shamin said.

However, Shamin did not specify how much this project was awarded to the Chinese company for.

The government unveiled a master plan to develop Thilafushi as the country’s main industrial hub on the 15th of December 2022.

As part of the plan, 150 hectares of land is to be reclaimed from the lagoon and developed along with the existing land of Thilafushi.

And under the Thilamale Bridge project the government is currently pursuing, Thilafushi will be connected with the rest of the islands in the greater Male’ area.
