Mohamed Saeed, who began a hunger strike over alleged harassment by a man accused of causing disturbances in his neighbourhood for the past one and a half years, has ended his protest after 35 hours following assurances of support from the authorities.

Saeed began the hunger strike on Saturday morning over complaints against Ahmed Farish, whom he accused of repeatedly harassing residents, pedestrians and motorists in the area where he lives in Malé.

According to Saeed, Farish had been causing disturbances in the neighbourhood for one and a half years, including shouting abusive language at pedestrians, obstructing vehicles and throwing rubbish into residential properties.

Police arrested Farish on Saturday on suspicion of causing public disturbances. However, Saeed continued his hunger strike, spending much of the time on the pavement along Majeedhee Magu.

On Sunday, Saeed announced that he had ended his hunger strike after 35 hours. He also shared a photograph on social media showing himself preparing to eat a meal.

Saeed said he had decided to end the protest after receiving assurances that the relevant authorities would provide assistance in addressing the matter.

He said Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan had personally contacted him and offered assurances regarding the case.

"I will continue to monitor whether the authorities implement these measures," Saeed said.

He also thanked those who had supported him during the protest.

Police have confirmed that Farish was arrested on suspicion of causing public disturbances and that efforts were under way to take action against him in accordance with the law.

However, police have not disclosed further details about the investigation or any charges that may be brought against him.

The allegations against Farish have not been established in court.
