The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has received requests for assistance from 89 properties in Malé after heavy rainfall caused flooding across the capital on Wednesday night.

According to figures released by the authority on Thursday, the affected premises included residential buildings, shops, schools, clinics and government facilities.

Shops and residential properties accounted for most of the reported cases, with 35 shops and 33 homes affected by flooding.

The remaining reports involved six cafés and restaurants, five government and private buildings, four schools, two clinics, two warehouses, one office building and one construction site.

NDMA said assistance was provided to 31 of the affected properties during the night.

The authority also handed over 10,000 sandbags to Malé City Council as part of efforts to reduce damage from flooding.

The flooding followed heavy rainfall across the capital and other parts of the Maldives.

According to the Maldives Meteorological Service, Malé recorded 90 millimetres of rainfall during the preceding 24 hours.

The Met Office has forecast further adverse weather conditions across parts of the country over the next three days, including heavy rain.

The latest flooding has affected homes, businesses and public facilities in the capital, with emergency response teams continuing efforts to address the impact of the rainfall.
