Parliament's Finance Committee on Tuesday approved an increase in the Chief Justice's monthly remuneration from MVR 91,000 to MVR 95,125 through the introduction of an additional allowance.

The proposal was submitted by Funadhoo MP Mohamed Mamdhooh of the ruling People's National Congress (PNC).

At Tuesday's committee meeting, Mamdhooh proposed introducing a special monthly allowance of MVR 4,125 for the Chief Justice.

The allowance would increase the Chief Justice's total monthly salary and benefits from MVR 91,000 to MVR 95,125.

The proposal was approved unanimously by all committee members present at the meeting.

Mamdhooh said the increase was intended to bring the Chief Justice's remuneration in line with that of the Speaker of Parliament.

The decision follows the Finance Committee's approval last Wednesday of increases in remuneration and allowances for the Speaker of Parliament, cabinet ministers and councillors.

Under those decisions, the Speaker will receive an additional allowance of MVR 22,000, bringing the total monthly remuneration to MVR 95,125.

The committee also approved an increase in the monthly car allowance for cabinet ministers to MVR 17,000.

As a result, ministers' total monthly remuneration, including salary and allowances, will rise from MVR 58,500 to MVR 75,500.

The committee further approved a monthly service allowance of MVR 5,000 for councillors.
