Preparations have begun to vacate Bandeyrikoshi 1 to make way for the construction of housing flats for Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and Maldives Police Service personnel.

The development is part of a government housing project announced by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu in May, aimed at providing accommodation for military and police personnel and their families.

Bandeyrikoshi currently accommodates families of serving military and police personnel. The government has decided to redevelop both Bandeyrikoshi 1 and Bandeyrikoshi 2 under the project.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the MNDF said the redevelopment would be carried out in phases, with work beginning at Bandeyrikoshi 1.

According to the MNDF, preparations for the first phase have already commenced.

The MNDF said construction of the new flats would begin once the existing premises had been vacated.

It added that information about the project and the relocation process was being shared with residents currently living at Bandeyrikoshi 1.

The MNDF said it was engaging with residents to explain the redevelopment plans, listen to their concerns and identify solutions to issues arising from the relocation.

The defence force also assured residents that those currently living at Bandeyrikoshi 1 would be provided with accommodation at the site once redevelopment was completed.

The MNDF said the overall project would also create housing opportunities for additional military and police personnel.

According to the defence force, the expansion of its services and operations has led to an increase in the number of personnel joining the military.

As a result, the number of service personnel requiring housing has also increased.

The government has identified the redevelopment of Bandeyrikoshi 1 and 2 as part of its efforts to address accommodation requirements among military and police personnel.

The MNDF has not announced a date for the relocation of existing residents or the commencement of construction.
