Former Malé City councillor Mohamed Aiman Ismail, also known as Aanu, has been remanded in custody for 30 days following his arrest over allegations of a sexual offence against a child.

Aiman was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of committing a sexual offence against a minor while occupying a position of trust.

Following his arrest, he was presented before a court for a remand hearing, where a judge ordered that he be detained for 30 days.

The remand order has not been published on the court's website, and further details of the allegations against him have not been disclosed.

Police media officer Ahmed Shiyam previously told some media outlets that the investigation was nearing completion.

According to Shiyam, the case concerns a family matter involving a child. He said the investigation had not yet been forwarded for prosecution because of delays in obtaining statements from some family members.

Aiman previously served as a councillor on Malé City Council, representing the Maafannu South constituency.

He was elected to the position in the 2014 local council elections.

The allegations against Aiman have not been proven in court.
