Former Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) President Abdulla Shahid has been removed from the party's National Council WhatsApp group following his arrest over an allegation of sexual harassment involving a minor.
Shahid, who previously served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and President of the United Nations General Assembly, was removed from the WhatsApp group on Saturday.
The 64-year-old politician was arrested last Monday on suspicion of sexually harassing a child under the age of 18.
The MDP has not issued any official statement regarding Shahid's arrest or the allegations against him.
A court has ordered Shahid to be remanded in custody for 30 days while the case is investigated.
Shahid has appealed the remand order at the High Court, seeking to have his detention overturned.
The allegation concerns the sexual harassment of a minor. According to information reported about the case, the alleged victim is 15 years old.
Shortly before his arrest, Shahid denied the allegations in a post on social media.
He described the claims as baseless accusations being circulated for political purposes to damage his reputation.
Shahid, who has held several senior government positions, maintained that the allegations against him were false.
The allegations have not been proven in court.
