There have been several cases of burglars stealing parked motorcycles and going around looting people on the road with it.
While some such cases have been registered with the police, it is learnt that the stolen motorcycles are used only for criminal activities such as robbery. After doing so, the thieves return the bike to the spot where it was located.
In many cases, it is known that the bike was stolen in the first place during police investigation of a robbery.
A person who had witnessed such an incident took to Twitter and said that his bike was stolen and then taken to Hulhumale. After committing the act, the perpetrators took the bike back to the spot, he said.
According to the victim, the robbery was commited cunningly, making sure tht the robber’s face was not caught on the camera.
"I think it would have been a big deal if I hadn't known that the bike had been stolen," the young man said on Twitter.
"It can happen to anyone."
With the help of CCTV footage, the police are on the lookout for the perpetrators of the act, he said. He also said that he had shared the story to urge people to stay away from it.
While the police have confirmed that such cases have been registered, they are yet to give the number of cases filed in this regard.
