Maldivians can now travel to China without visa

Last year, the Maldives and China celebrated 50 years of bilateral relations.

China has started implementing an agreement with the Maldives to issue a 30-day on-arrival visa that allows Maldivians to travel to China without obtaining a prior visa.

According to the agreement signed by the two countries during Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi's visit to the Maldives in January 2022, the regulations will come into effect after China lifts Covid-19 restrictions.

Foreign minister Abdulla Shahid announced on Twitter on Friday that it is now effective.

Last year, the Maldives and China celebrated 50 years of bilateral relations. During Wang Yi's visit last year to mark the occasion, the two countries signed four more agreements:

Diplomatic relations between Maldives and China were established on April 15, 1972.
