An Indian vessel that capsized at K. Thilafushi Kudagiri in January while carrying scrap metal has been fined more than MVR 3 million.
The 'AM MSV Maria Sinthayathirai Riana', which usually carries vegetables from India, ran aground on the Kudagiri reef, causing extensive damage to the area.
In a statement, the EPA said on Monday that after the vessel was salvaged, the damage to the environment in the area was surveyed by the owners and EPA personnel. The survey found that an area equivalent to 130 sqm had been damaged.
According to the EPA:

Based on the damage caused, the vessel was fined MVR 3.9 million

On February 28, the owner was asked to pay the amount within 30 days
