Protesters from B. Dhonfanu obstructed a group of divers near the island on Friday as demonstrations continued against the government’s decision to cancel a land reclamation project.
The reclamation project, announced by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu during a visit to Baa Atoll, faced opposition from environmental groups due to its proximity to the Hanifaru Bay Biosphere Reserve. The government later decided not to proceed, prompting protests from some residents.
Videos posted on social media showed protesters in boats confronting divers near Dhonfanu. Protesters held signs reading “You can’t dive here, please leave,” while divers insisted they had the right to access the area. The video showed verbal exchanges between the two groups.
On Thursday, Dhonfanu Council announced a temporary ban on diving within 700 metres of the island’s reef, citing the ongoing protests. The council said it would report violations to the relevant authorities.
However, the Local Government Authority (LGA) later ruled the ban unlawful and instructed the council to cancel the order.
