The operator of NOOE Maldives Kunaavashi has been fined MVR 20,000 for constructing a seaplane platform without completing the required Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process.
The Environmental Regulatory Authority (ERA) said the development was carried out before obtaining the authority's approval and without fulfilling the environmental assessment requirements mandated under national regulations.
According to a statement issued by the agency, the project proceeded without the authorisation required under EIA regulations, resulting in the imposition of a MVR 20,000 fine.
The ERA said the penalty represents the standard fine applied for a first offence of this nature.
The resort is operated by CJL Investment Private Limited, a company based in China.
The authority said the fine was imposed on Sunday and must be paid within 30 days.
In its statement, the ERA also advised the company to ensure that future development projects comply with environmental regulations and proceed only after completing all required stages of the EIA process and obtaining the necessary approvals.
The agency said the requirement to conduct an Environmental Impact Assessment and secure approval before undertaking specified developments is intended to ensure that projects are carried out in accordance with environmental regulations and established procedures.
