An Indian national has been arrested in connection with a case of human trafficking.
The 20-year-old man, identified as Venkataramana Palla, was produced before Criminal Court on Friday and remanded to 15 days in police custody.
The man, who lives in a guesthouse in Henveiru ward, is accused of trying to smuggle people or participating in human trafficking.
According to the remand order, he is accused of being involved in an organised human trafficking ring that commits such crimes both in the Maldives and abroad.
His local sponsor had reported him to the police after he fled after coming to the Maldives, the order said.
The police are yet to reveal more details about the case.
