Cabinet on Tuesday deliberated on 39 recommendations proposed by a cabinet sub-committee that investigated the riot that took place at the Yoga Day celebrations.

On June 21, a Yoga Day event organised by the government and the Indian High Commission was attacked violently by a mob storming the national stadium while many people; Indian diplomats, government officials, children and senior citizens sat on their mats, ready to perform yoga.

The case is being investigated by a sub-committee of the cabinet.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Tuesday instructed relevant authorities to implement the recommendations made in the investigative report provided by the cabinet committee.

In the discussions that were held at the President’s Office, 39 recommendations in five areas of governance were proposed by the subcommittee:

  • Strengthening policies governing security operations

  • Preparing policies to resolve religious disharmony

  • Policies regarding organising and holding of events

  • Policies to ensure the accountability of responsible parties in such incidents

  • Identifying and promptly addressing threats to national security

According to the President's Office, the cabinet produced an investigative report  of the Yoga Day disruption, but this has not been published.
