Voting begins in Guraidhoo parliamentary by-election

Voting is underway in three islands of the constituency as well as in capital Male.

Voting for the by-election to the K. Guraidhoo parliamentary seat began Saturday morning.

The parliamentary seat in Guraidhoo constituency fell vacant after opposition PPM's Ibrahim Riza, who held the seat for the last three terms, passed away in late February while undergoing treatment for cancer. 

Three candidates from three different parties are in the fray:

  • Hussain Riza Adam, Seaweed/K. Guraidhoo (PPM) – He is the brother of former MP Ibrahim Riza

  • Ibrahim Shaz, Fiveros/K. Guraidhoo (MDP)

  • Ali Areef, Fiyathoshige/K. Guraidhoo (MNP)

Voting is underway in three islands of the constituency as well as in capital Male. 

Ballot boxes have been set up as follows:

  • Guraidhoo - Guraidhoo council office (meeting room) and Guraidhoo youth centre

  • Gulhi - Gulhi school

  • Maafushi – Maafushi school has two boxes

  • Male - Izzuddin school

Voting began at 8am in all islands of the constituency except Male. Voting began at 8.30pm in Male. Polling will continue till 4pm.

Eligible voters include a total of 3,423:

  • Gulhi - 615

  • Maafushi - 1,224

  • Guraidhoo - 1,133

  • Male - 451
