President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that MDP’s victory in the by-election to the K. Guraidhoo constituency held on Saturday shows that the people of the constituency are with the government.

In the by-election held on Saturday, Ibrahim Shaz of MDP won against Hussain Riza Adam of PPM and Ali Areef of MNP. With this, for the first time, a constituency where the opposition party has been in control for a long time has turned around.

"This election has shown that the people of the constituency are with the government. The party's victory in this seat for the first time is a big boost for the party," President Solih tweeted on Saturday evening congratulating Shaz, who is seeking a second term.

With two factions emerging within the party and supporters of party president Mohamed Nasheed openly working against President Solih, the victory is being described by many ordinary members and the leadership as a historic, big achievement. Senior party leaders said it was a victory for President Solih.

Provisional results:

  • Ibrahim Shaz (MDP) - 1,346

  • Hussain Riza Adam (PPM) - 1,226

  • Ali Areef (MNP) - 122

A total of 3,423 voters were eligible to exercise their right in the election, according to data released by the Election Commission. A total of 2,755 voters or 80.4% of the eligible voters exercised their right.

The by-election to Guraidhoo constituency was necessitated after PPM’s Ibrahim Riza, who was the constituency’s MP for the last three terms, passed away in late February while undergoing treatment for cancer.

The party had fielded Hussain Riza, brother of Ibrahim Riza.
