A replacement vessel for a Coastguard ship gifted by India, the largest vessel in the MNDF Coastguard, arrived in Maldives on Monday.
MNDF said in a statement that it was looking for more boats to replace Huravee to enhance their operational capabilities. The Indian government had decided to donate the boat to support the cause, MNDF said.
MNDF said that the new boat donated by the Indian government arrived in the capital on Saturday. Necessary preparations to formally hand it over to MNDF is underway.
-
Training programmes are being conducted to familiarise the Coast Guard personnel on the vital machinery on the boat
-
The Indian Navy crew, who helped bring the boat to Male, after the completion of the two-week programme and the official handing over of the boat, will return to India
Huravee ship:
-
India handed over Huravee to Maldives in 2006
-
Since then, it has been repaired every two years by India
-
So far, the boat has been refited and repaired at the Indian Naval Dockyard six times
This time, the Indian government donated a bigger boat than Huravee. Its operational capabilities are also higher than that of Huravee and is a recent model.
Once the new vessel is handed over to MNDF, the use of Huravee will be discontinued.
