Convict escapes from Rasdhoo; caught in sea

AA. Rasdhoo police have re-arrested the prisoner who escaped from arrest at Rasdhoo Police Station while he was swimming in the neighbouring Kuramathi resort's lagoon.

The police had earlier said that the Hussain Shahban, AA. Himandhoo, had escaped while he wast taken out from the cell where he was kept.

Since Friday night, the police have been on the lookout for Shahban. They also sought the help of the public this evening for information if there was any news of him.

According to locals, Shahban was spotted near Kuramathi resort, about five minutes from Rasdhoo. He was arrested by the police while he was swimming near the speedboats of the resort, said one of them.

People had speculated that since a criminal could not escape in a small town like Rasdhoo, where there was no wooded area even, there was a high probability that he would flee from the island via sea or swimming. Since ear;y Saturday evening, the police had been checking the Kuramathi area as it was a possibility the prisoner would attempt swimming the distance.

"The police arrested him right away. He has now been taken to Rasdhoo police station," said a resident.
