A no-confidence motion has been submitted to the parliament on Thursday against Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath over the government's stand in delimitation of the maritime boundary between the Maldives and Chagos in the south.

Opposition PPM, parliamentarians supporting speaker Mohamed Nasheed, Jumhooree Party (JP) and Maldives National Party (MNP) filed the motion.

At a joint press conference held at the parliament secretariat on Thursday, minority leader Ahmed Saleem said that the no-confidence motion against Riffath has been tabled in the parliament:

  • For failing to protect the highest interests of the nation

  • The Attorney General was present when a part of the country's waters were sold off

"It's not child’s play. We will continue to work on it. We will not back off no matter what action is taken against us." the Eydhafushi MP said.

However, they did not say how many signatures were included in the no-confidence motion.

A no-confidence motion will also be filed against President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and foreign minister Abdulla Shahid in the coming week, they announced.

The International Tribunal on the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) on April 28 sided with the Maldives in the dispute with Mauritius surrounding the delimitation of the maritime boundary of the Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ) of the Maldives and the Chagos archipelago, awarding a bigger portion to the Maldives.

ITLOS noted that the size of the relevant area is calculated to be approximately 92,563 sqkm. The delimitation line allocates to Mauritius 45,331 sqkm and to the Maldives 47,232 sqkm.
