Elections Commission (EC) has decided to dissolve the Maldives Reform Movement (MRM) as the party led by former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom does not have minimum required 3,000 members.
An official of the commission confirmed the decision on Wednesday.
The official said the decision to dissolve the MRM, which is part of the ruling coalition but is yet to formally endorse President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for a second term, was taken because they could not reach the 3,000-member threshold in the opportunity given.
MRM secretary general Abdul Aleem told Atoll Times that the commission has not yet informed MRM about the dissolution of the party.
He said that during the period given to the party to gather more members, MRM has submitted enough applications through the commission's portal to meet the 3,000-mark.
Since then, several members in key party positions have resigned from the party. It is learnt that some of the party's general members have also parted ways.
