After two days, the HRCM members met the PPM/PNC leadership on Thursday. The opposition has since said the commission is under government influence and will move a no-confidence motion in parliament.
The opposition PPM/PNC coalition leader, former President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayoom, is currently being tried in the Criminal Court. The opposition went to the HRCM on Wednesday over the prolongation of the hearings.
The leadership of the opposition PPM/PNC coalition stayed there long, till 8:30pm from 12:45pm, and returned without meeting any member of the HRCM.
The HRCM met the opposition at 9am on Thursday after the opposition demonstration at the HRCM on Wednesday.
After the meeting, the opposition leadership told the media that the HRCM also feels that Yameen's trial should not be conducted for 13 hours when they expressed their concerns to the commission. However, the opposition said that the HRCM has not expressed its concerns openly and has not made any efforts to find a solution.
According to the opposition:
-
The HRCM’s actions show that all institutions are locked down
-
Do not believe the HRCM is concerned about Yameen’s case; the HRCM should not have waited to issue a statement until we appear here
-
Such institutions are influenced by the government, but President Solih doesn’t have much time left; he will be ousted in 80 days
-
We will start the process of expelling the five HRCM members when the parliament starts running
The opposition did add that they hoped the HRCM will listen to the complaints of the opposition even though the commission is composed of politicians, and bring a quick solution to the issues they raised.
After the meeting with the HRCM, the opposition went to the President's Office at 11am on Thursday. This is the third day that the opposition has been going to the president’s office in protest. Nobody from the President's Office has met with the opposition on any of these visits.
