Maldives has begun issuing 90-day on-arrival visas to Sri Lankan nationals from Tuesday, the Department of Immigration announced on Wednesday.

According to Immigration, the decision was made following discussions held with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake during his visit to the Maldives.

The policy of issuing 90-day free on-arrival visas to Maldivian visiting Sri Lanka had already been in effect since January.

A joint statement released during President Dissanayake’s visit with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu confirmed the continuation of the visa arrangement. It also noted that one-year spouse and medical visas will be granted to families of Maldivians who are working or studying in Sri Lanka.

This year marks 60 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Maldives and Sri Lanka. Bilateral ties were formally initiated on 26 July, coinciding with Maldives' Independence Day. President Dissanayake’s visit coincides with the 60th anniversary of these relations.
