The incident took place around 11am.
Shabana Abdul Sattar, a member of the island council, told Atoll Times that the boy was accompanied by a girl of roughly the same age when he drowned.
A relative also confirmed it to the Atoll Times.
"The boy was 1 year and 10 months old. There is a 10-day difference between the other child and him. They are cousins," the relative said.
The man, who spoke on behalf of the family on condition of anonymity, said the children were playing in the courtyard as they usually did, before venturing into the beach.
"It's not too far from the sea," he said.
"The parents, who were looking for them, found them eight minutes later," he said, pointing out that the boy was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
According to him, the deceased was the couple's only child.
Police said they were investigating the matter.
