IOIG: Maldives women's TT team glows with gold medal
The women's TT team became the first Maldivian national team to defend a gold medal in a foreign tournament.
Maldives' national women's Table Tennis (TT) team defeated Mauritius in the final of the Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG), defending their gold medal as they did four years ago.
The final of the tournament was held in Madagascar on Sunday.
Maldives's women's TT team beat Mauritius 3-1 in four matches to win their first medal at the ongoing IOIG. Fathimath Dheema Ali won two singles matches.
Then another young player, Aishath Rafa Nazim, won.
Mauritius won the match 3-1 against Laisa Fathuhullah Ismail.
Rafa won the first singles of the finals by 3-0. Dheema caught up with the Mauritian player after she led the first game with a 3-1 win.
Maldives won the third singles match via Dheema easily by 3-0. The women's TT team became the first Maldivian national team to defend a gold medal in a foreign tournament.
There are high expectations for the players of the Maldivian women's national TT team. The individual matches will start next. Dheema won the gold medal in the singles tournament in Mauritius. Dheema and Rafa also won the women's doubles gold medal.
