The police have said that they cannot investigate a case filed by the parliament alleging bribing parliamentarians.
The parliament filed the complaint with the police after Speaker Mohamed Nasheed had alleged the bribery of members of the parliament by the parliament.
Police said in a statement to the media on Monday that the letter sent by the parliament secretariat to the police alleged bribery of MPs but did not provide the basic information needed to start an investigation as a criminal case.
Police said:
-
A letter was sent to the parliament responding that a criminal case cannot be registered
-
If there is such information, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has the jurisdiction to investigate the bribery case
-
The police have informed the parliament that they believe that such a case should be referred to the ACC
Police said they had informed the parliament that the police would provide assistance if ACC requested assistance in such an investigation.
Nasheed made the bribery allegations after Thoddu MP Hassan Shiyan left The Democrats and returned to the MDP.
