Parliament asks police to probe allegations of govt bribing MPs

Parliament secretariat on Saturday filed a complaint with the police alleging that lawmakers are being bribed.
Confirming the submission, Parliament's Media and Communications Director Hassan Ziyau told Atoll Times that the matter has been submitted to the police on Saturday requesting an investigation.
Parliament filed the case after speaker Mohamed Nasheed had accused President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih of bribing MPs.
In an X post on Saturday, Nasheed tagged President Solih and accused him of bribing MPs and others with state funds “without any shame or fear”.
"No good will come out of it. It will only shame you," Nasheed wrote.
Nasheed made the remarks after Thoddoo MP Hassan Shiyan left The Democrats, a breakaway party founded by Nasheed, and rejoined the ruling MDP on Friday.
Yasir Abdul Latheef, who joined The Democrats along with Shiyan, also rejoined the MDP this month. Yasir was accompanied by Kulhudhuffushi councillors who also rejoined the MDP.
The Democrats accuse people of leaving the party and joining the MDP following large bribes.
