President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih will not get the support of the people in the upcoming presidential election, even if he can get parliament members to sign up for MDP after embezzling public money and bribing them, the founder of The Democrats and parliament speaker Mohamed Nasheed said on Saturday.
The Democrats held a rally at Bondibaiy Park in Male on Saturday evening to campaign for their presidential canidate, Hulhudhoo MP Ilyas Labeeb and his running mate Hussain Amr.
Speaking at the rally, Nasheed lashed out at MDP and President Solih, in reference to lawmakers that were rejoining the ruling MDP after defecting from The Democrats.
MPs are switching to the MDP after taking bribes, Nasheed said, following the rejoining of Thoddu MP Hassan Shiyan, who was formerly in The Democrats and Nasheed’s faction within the MDP.
Nasheed blatantly accused Shiyan of switching to the MDP for money. The parliament’s administration has also filed a complaint with the police for alleged bribing of MPs.
Nasheed said the President is now taking state money and deceiving the people in various ways, when he began talking about the parliament members.
Nasheed also alleged that the money was being distributed and spent on different people and the money was being used to divert lawmakers into MDP.
"What you are doing now is shameful; taking the peoples’ money and spending it this way and that in total betrayal of the people," he said.
"By sending the money to different people, spending the money to bribe the lawmakers to join MDP."
Nasheed addressed the president in his speech, saying that even if people joined MDP for money, he would not get the support of the people for money. According to Nasheed, Ilyas Labeeb will win the support that is lost from President Solih.
"I would tell the president, sir. Indeed! You saw someone joining MDP following that [the bribe money]. However, you will not get the support of the people, the love of the people or the approval of the people," Nasheed said.
