The Democrats on Thursday elected Central Henveriu MP Ali Azim as its leader of the Parliamentary Group (PG).
The first PG election of The Democrats, which was formed and registered last July, was held at the party headquarters on Thursday.
Azim was elected PG leader of the 13-member Democrats by a unanimous vote of 11 members that voted. He was, in the past, the leader of the MDP parliamentary group.
Other Democrats on PG:
-
Vice-Leaders: Gaddhoo MP Ahmed Zahir and Maafannu Central MP Ibrahim Rasheed
-
Secretary-General: Ungoofaru MP Mohammed Waheed
-
Whip: Mahchangolhi North MP Mohamed Rasheed
They were all elected by a unanimous vote of 11 members.
The Democrats, who contested the presidential election on Saturday, received about 15,000 votes. The party won third place in the election while the PPM-PNC and MDP went to the second round.
The two parties have already begun coalition talks with The Democrats. However, many of those who expressed their views at The Democrats Interim council meeting held on Tuesday said they did not want to support the MDP presidential candidate.
