President-elect Dr Mohamed Muizzu has vowed to investigate corruption cases that have been committed during both the administrations, stating that there are more alleged thefts committed during incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's administration than during former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's government.
Muizzu made the remarks in an interview with Qatar's Al-Jazeera channel.
"Well, I think we will look into all these issues [of the Yameen govewrnment], and this government has, you know, more issues," he said, instead of providing a direct answer when the journalist questioned whether “the progressive party of the Maldives learned
from the lessons, the issues, the convictions, as well as allegations that were made against the former president, Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayoom, related to corruption”.
Answering the question, Muizzu mentioned that:
-
The MDP MPs in parliament were also talking about the theft of their own government
-
They are also saying that the people's money has been stolen more than ever before
“And, for example, during the Covid period, billions of Rufiyaa has been lost and nobody knows what's happened. The ventilators are supposed to be here, but still it's not here. And we don't know what happened to them”, Muizzu said:
“So I will make sure that the government is very responsible and look into all this."
Muizzu said his government would be a 'clean government' free from theft. He also assured that nothing would be hidden from the media and the public.
Muizzu had also affirmed in his interview to Atoll Times as President-Elect that he would try to recover the money lost from the MMPRC scandal during Yameen's administration.
Replying to the question from the Al-Jazeera reporter about Muizzu's previous remarks about the allegations on and release promises of Yameen, Muizzu said:
-
Yameen has been charged with political offences; once he can establish an independent judiciary, Yameen's release will be in the hands of the judges
-
This government has not been able to recover anything lost in the MMPRC corruption scandal; the 'assets' lost to the state will be recovered at a fast pace under Muizzu's government
-
What is needed is sincerity, not new laws.
