The government on Monday assured that services in the health sector will not be interrupted due to lack of medical supplies.
The government said this in response to concerns raised by the President-elect's Office on Monday that the foreign company, which runs the heart and kidney care centre set up at the government's largest hospital, IGMH, may discontinue its services after it failed to pay USD 5.3 million to the service providers.
Presidential spokesperson Miuvan Mohammed said that health services will not be interrupted and the necessary equipment will be available as it was during the pandemic.
"In more difficult times like during the COVID-19 pandemic, medical supplies were made available as needed. Please do not spread such rumours using part of the information available to create fear and anxiety in the hearts of the people," he said.
At a press conference held by the President-elect's office, the spokesman Mohamed Firzul Abdullah Haleel said the transitional committee had noticed serious concerns from the meetings held with senior officials of the IGMH. As such, he said:
-
Some of the special centres at the hospital are run in collaboration with various foreign hospitals and companies
-
There is a fear that the services provided by the Kidney Center and the Heart Center will be stopped
-
The foreign company that provides services to the two centres has outstanding bills of USD 5.3 million
-
These bills include expenses related to various medical equipment provided by the company
-
As the costs of these items have not been paid, the Transitional Committee has expressed concern that the supply of these items may be discontinued
