Everyone may not know the religion of Islam perfectly but that is not a reason to insult someone, home minister Imran Abdullah said on Monday.

He made the statement while speaking at the official ceremony held on the occasion of the annual day celebrated to commemorate the day Maldives embraced Islam.

Imran spoke about the importance of maintaining Maldives as an Islamic country and passing it on to future generations. He called on the government to do everything possible to spread religious knowledge and make people more aware of the religion.

"We, the people of this country, are in the holy religion of Islam under the benevolence of Allah. We must pass on the knowledge of the religion from one generation to another”.

He also said it is possible that not everyone knows the same amount of religious studies. Imran said that not knowing well enough of religion is not a reason to treat anyone with contempt.

"It's not going to be seen in communities that everyone knows religion equally. It's not for anyone to use harsh words, abuses, humiliate and insult others for that. On a day like this, it is important for us to remember this," Imran said.
