Maldives on Tuesday called on the international community to act more urgently to provide immediate assistance to the Gaza Strip as the situation in Gaza is deteriorating due to the Israeli aggression and sanctions.

Maldives made the call in a statement to the Economic and Financial Affairs Committee (Second Committee) of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

In this statement, Maldives noted the plight of the Palestinian people for many years and expressed concern over the ongoing offensive in Gaza.

In the statement, Maldives had:

  • Called for an end to attacks on civilians and public infrastructure in Gaza

  • Israel's order to 1.2 million people living in northern Gaza to move to southern Gaza within 24 hours and millions to leave their homes in just six hours violates international and human rights laws

  • Therefore, Maldives has called on Israel to withdraw the order

  • Maldives has called on the international community to stop the attacks immediately

It noted that indiscriminate attacks on civilians and militants are “collective punishment” and stressed the importance of opening humanitarian avenues for the immediate delivery of medicine, food and essential supplies to the Palestinian people.

Maldives's statement reiterated its unconditional support for the Palestinian people in their legitimate and rightful efforts to secure their rights, including the establishment of a separate state.

Maldives on Tuesday reiterated at the UN that a permanent and sustainable solution would be achieved through the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, based on the former 1967 borders.
