President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has officially abolished the Maldives Sports Corporation following the ratification of amendments to the Sports Act.

The announcement was made during a brief ceremony held at the President's Office Monday, where the President signed the amendments into law.

In response to a question raised by a journalist at the event, President Muizzu confirmed that while the Sports Corporation will be dissolved with immediate effect, employees of the state-owned company will be given alternative employment opportunities within the government. Further details were not provided.

The Sports Corporation, a fully government-owned entity, has recorded accumulated losses of MVR 34.5 million, according to audit reports. Its financial performance had led the previous administration to consider its dissolution.

Speaking at the ceremony, President Muizzu stated that the government remains committed to developing sports infrastructure across the Maldives. He noted that efforts are underway to establish sports facilities in both urban and regional areas to ensure greater access.

The President also outlined plans to provide training opportunities for athletes and to begin work on large-scale sports facilities, particularly in the Malé region, which is the most densely populated area in the country.
